Abstract Investigations have been conducted to determine the feasibility of using collisional cooling for reducing the energy spreads and, consequently, the emittances of negative-ion beams. We have designed a gas-filled RFquadrupole ion cooler equipped with provisions for retarding energetic negative ion beams to energies below thresholds for electron detachment at injection and for reacceleration to high energies after the cooling process. The device has been used to cool O and F ion beams with initial energy spreads, ∆E > 10 eV to final energy spreads, ∆E ~ 2 eV FWHM. Overall transmission efficiencies of ~14% for F beams have been obtained. Experimental results show that electron detachment is the major loss mechanism for negative ions.

Laser Acceleration and Laser Cooling for Ion Beams
Cooling and acceleration of ions by lasers has gained increasing attention over the last years. The common interest is to further increase the luminosity of ion beams, either by shrinking the phase space occupied by the beam, or simply via increasing the number of particles. Recently, laser cooling has demonstrated ion beam crystallization as the ultimate reduction of the beam temperature. On t...
متن کاملControlling release, unfolding and dissociation of membrane protein complexes in the gas phase through collisional cooling.
Mass spectrometry of intact membrane protein complexes requires removal of the detergent micelle by collisional activation. We demonstrate that the necessary energy can be obtained by adjusting the degree of collisional cooling in the ion source. This enables us to extend the energy regime for dissociation of membrane protein complexes.

Laser cooling of stored 24Mg ion beams recently led to the long anticipated experimental realization of Coulombordered ‘crystalline’ ion beams in the low-energy RF-quadrupole storage ring PAul Laser CooLing Acceleration System (Munich). Moreover, systematic studies revealed severe constraints on the cooling scheme and the storage ring lattice for the attainment and maintenance of the crystallin...
متن کاملTransverse Instablility Due to the Space Charge During the Electron-Cooling Bunching of Ion Beams
A beam-tracking simulation has been done for study of the electron-cooling bunching of ion beams around a few hundred MeV/u. In the simulation, the field due to the space charge of a beam in a round vacuum chamber is calculated from the charge distribution of macro-particles and the image particles due to the macro-particles. The simulation results show that the bunched beams meet a transverse ...
متن کاملThe quest for crystalline ion beams
The phase transition of an ion beam into its crystalline state has long been expected to dramatically influence beam dynamics beyond the limitations of standard accelerator physics. Yet, although considerable improvement in beam cooling techniques has been made, strong heating mechanisms inherent to existing high-energy storage rings have prohibited the formation of the crystalline state in the...
